>I believe I would buy a new computer before undertaking such exhaustive efforts.

Since I thought it was a software problem, I figured that the new computer would inherit the same problems as soon as I installed everything onto it.

I'm having similar problems and also a sleep issue that hangs the machine. In fact the machine hangs anytime I see these kind of display abnormalities. I end up having to reboot via the power button.

I'm not great with command line, but I have no symptoms when booted into XP via boot camp, so I can rule out the hardware angle. I've zapped the PRAM and the problem has gone away temporarily, but I'm assuming that the PRAM will get messed up by whatever messed it up before and I'll be zapping the PRAM regularly. I guess I would be comfortable with this if I was running OS 9.2 on a 300 mhz machine, but I'm running 10.5 on a dual quad core 3 Ghz.

I hope someone finds an answer to this.

Wow! I never had a canon scanner connected to my Mac, but I removed the driver file as you suggested, and my performance problems are solved!

I can't thank you enough. I want to hear Apples explanation of this and will probably have to wait a long time...).

You don't seem to be the only one with this issue: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1390673&tstart=0. I wouldn't be so sure that it's really the Canon drivers causing this. I for one have been having the same issue you describe and never had a Canon scanner or Parallels installed. If the linked article should be believed, this is some major (and very mainstream) Leopard bug

Wow, your efforts were herculean. I commend you!

I'm currently having issues with my AIM in iChat. I've not even begun to start but I don't think I've ever considered such efforts to debug an issue.
